The Temporality of Being by Andy Hatton

The Dorney House - Fort Nelson c1978, by architect J.H. Esmond Dorney - is widely regarded as one of Australia’s best houses. Significantly, the Dorney House was recently awarded international recognition by Docomomo, a body recognising important modernist architecture globally. In September 2023, Andy was commissioned by Paddy Dorney (son of Esmond) to document the house, its light, energy and environment.

The Temporality of Being explores the relationship between time and human existence through the Dorney House. Here, the house serves as a metaphorical landscape, where past, present, and future converge. It reflects how time shape’s identity and memory, becoming a living framework for understanding the profound effects of temporal existence.
